These pictures were taken February 1999 on Lake of the Woods, Ontario, at Hay Island. This is a good area for Black Crappie, we had some very good weather and fishing was excellent. To get here, you drive accross the lake for about 6 miles. There was nearly 30 inchs of ice, so no worry about falling through.
My Dad and myself just arrived and are just setting up, roads out here can get pretty mucky, so dont mind my dirty truck, you can see the fish finder and two rods set up, and lots of round holes in the ice, and lawn chairs are handy for ice fishing.
My Dad reeling in his line to check the bait, we use small minows on a small jig.
Here i am pulling up another nice size crappie.
They dont get very big, but they sure are good to eat.
This is how i like to set up, 3 holes, with fish finder in center hole, and two rods on either side, a nice lil pile of crappies off to the side. Sometimes its tricky if you catch a fish on both rods at the same time.
My Dad with a few crappies that he has caught, you can see the power ice auger leaning against my truck in the upper right corner.
This was another outting, with friends and family, its lunch time and everyone is getting hamburgers and hotdogs off the bbq, note all the other vehicles and ice shacks in the background, we are sitting over 45 feet of water here, the fishing was so good here, 150-250 people out fishing at once was not uncommon.
My Mom enjoying lunch while waiting for a fish to bite.
It was a windy day, so we made a circle with the trucks to try and form a windbreak, it did help quite a bit.
